Session 1: Managing your team- Coaching and mentoring
When you become a Deputy one of the key roles, in partnership with your Headteacher, is that of managing your peers. This can be demanding and sometimes demoralising. This course will enable you to look afresh at how to successfully manage conversations, how to move people forward and how to create a shared purpose. Delegates will also learn how to approach difficult conversations and how to manage the sometimes difficult role of creating trust with all members of the school community.
Session 2: Developing a strategic view- Managing Change
Being an effective coach and mentor is a very important skill for a Deputy Head. They are unique tools which can transform an underperforming colleague to a key member of staff and transform a good teacher to an outstanding teacher. Delegates will explore the differences between coaching and mentoring and learn the art of being a ‘slippery mirror’ able to accurately reflect colleagues performance to them whilst remaining professional. Delegates will also learn about UPR and the impact it can have.
Session 3: Monitoring- beyond the obvious!
Data is very important, but it only gives us part of the story about what is happening in a school. During this course delegates will learn about the many other ways of understanding what the key issues in a school are and how to find ‘the real truth’, so you can establish exactly where you are when you start to plan the next steps forward. Delegates will learn how to really listen, to learn what is important and how that informs what they want to do and also, crucially, what they are doing well.
