I started my teaching career in Primary schools in Hertfordshire 35 years ago, quickly taking up the role of SENCo in addition. Since November 1999 I have worked at Chessbrook , an Outstanding Education Centre in Watford, both as a teacher to secondary students and as part of Extended Roll outreach support team in Primary schools. I have led this team as Manager for the past 9 years in my role as Leader in Learning within the centre. The team offers support for pupils, their families and schools in the form of varied and tailor-made interventions, and includes counsellors, primary teachers and outreach mentors. These valuable interventions enable pupils to make academic, emotional and behavioural progress and make a positive difference to their successful inclusion in school.
My passion is for promoting this positive behaviour management and inclusion in schools and I have been developing my skills in these areas over many years. During this time I have learnt the importance of good training, practice and feedback and a desire to continually improve.
I am a Herts Steps trained tutor, training staff in the local authority's preferred approach to supporting positive behaviour management. I have a certificate of further professional study from the University of Cambridge in Understanding the Theory and Practice of Nurture Groups (2004). I am trained in basic counselling skills and in the GROW model of coaching and I am also trained by the Marlborough Family Education Centre in the principals of multi-family group therapy and used this to develop our family Reflect and Relaunch groups both in Chessbrook and primary schools. I planned and led a new initiative START (Secondary Transition and Resilience Tools Workshop) bringing secondary and primary schools together to look at the secondary transition process.
